Before being a hot topic, he was enrolled at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa. 

He started his playing career in his college days; he was a player in college football at Kansas State University, where he was a football and Academic All-American.

Lockett had an iconic college career; he led the Big 12 Conference in receptions per game as a member of the 1996 Wildcats. He also was a 1996 All-Big 12 Conference first-team wide receiver.

On August 31, 1996, he made the first blocked kick on special teams in Big 12 Conference history. 

He was one of the record-building students at Kansas State school. Interestingly, his eldest son Tyler broke his career receiving yards record (3032, 1993–96). 

Also,  his record of single-season receiving yards by a freshman (770, 1998) was broken by his brother Aaron Lockett.

His professional career started when he was selected Lockett in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft with the 47th overall selection by the Kansas City Chiefs.

However, he signed a two-year contract with the Washington Redskins in the following 2000 seasons but was released on November 1 after tallying 11 receptions (including two touchdowns) for 129 yards.

Just two days after his release from the Redskins, the athlete signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Later on, New York Jets signed Lockett in mid-November.
