Former NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, were on their way to the University of Connecticut for a basketball game as they drove from their Newport Beach home to Orange County’s John Wayne Airport.

A chartered helicopter was waiting at the airport for their travel to Kobe’s Mamba Institute in Thousand Oaks. Dad Bryant was the coach for Gianna’s team at a tournament. They flew off just after nine o’clock in the morning.

At Bryant’s home, their oldest daughter Natalia Bryant went for an ACT prep session, while Kobe’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, nestled in for a morning with her two youngest daughters, then-3-year-old Bianka and 7-month-old Capri.

Vanessa contacted her husband as soon as she learned there was an accident. She tried to contact her mother, Sofia Urbieta Laine as well and begged her to come over there and babysit Bianka and Capri since she needed to travel to Los Angeles as soon as possible.

Simultaneously, she noticed on her phone that social media was flooded with “R.I.P. Kobe” postings. Vanessa and the assistant took the car and picked Natalia up, informing her 17-year-old if there were survivors, her father and sister Gigi had to be amongst them.

She continued inquiring if her husband, Kobe, and daughter, Gianna, were alright at the Malibu-Lost Hills station of the County Sheriff’s Department, but they didn’t respond. Then a pastor appeared and informed her that no survivors had been found yet, along with seven other people.
