'}};Ecuadorian forward Christian Benítez, who died in Qatar on Monday, "was destined to die" because of a deficiency in one of the coronary arteries that was only detected after his death, according to the results of a new autopsy made public by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (EFF).
"He had a heart condition that could only have been detected by an autopsy," EFF president Luis Chiriboga revealed. "One of these days…to put it simply, our dear Chucho was destined to die. That's what Doctor (Patricio) Maldonado told me."
The body of the 27 year old player arrived in Quito early on Friday, where a second examination was carried out at the request of his family. His parents suspected Benítez hadn't received the necessary medical attention at the hospital he was taken to after complaining of stomach pains, according to comments made by his wife Liseth Chalá. However, on Wednesday Qatari club Al Jaish claimed Benítez had died due to a heart failure.
Chiriboga expressed serious doubts hours before he leaned of the results of the second autopsy. "Nobody accepts this. The report is very brief, it says he had a heart attack, but the causes are unknown," Chiriboga said.
The autopsy performed in Ecuador was carried out by four specialists in the presence of his family members. "Chucho's body was intact, all of his organs in place, which indicates the people of Qatar acted in good faith and made a second autopsy possible," Chiriboga added.
