TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazilian researchers discovered a new species of river dolphin that has been existed since the First World War in 1918. The dolphins are called Araguaia, the name of the river where they were found. The discovered species was the fifth of its kind in the world. The discovery has been published in a science journal Plos One.
As quoted from BBC on Thursday, January 23, 2014, the researchers said that the recently discovered species of river dolphin is different from from other South American river doplphins.
The river dolphins are the rarest creature in the world. According to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), there are only four known species that exists in the world, three of which included in an endangered species list. One of the most well-known species, the Yangtze River dolphins or Baiji, had extincted in 2006.
