Rainy Season in Jakarta Starts This November, Peaks in January-February 2024

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) chief, Isnawa Aji, confirmed that the rainy season will come later than usual and was predicted to start this November. “And it will peak in January and February 2024,” he said in a press statement today, Nov. 23, 2023.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Isnawa said this year’s rainy season indeed comes late as the Asian monsoon would begin to enter Indonesian territory in November 2023.

The Asian monsoon is a wind moving from the west of Indonesia bringing more air masses, which cause high waves, strong winds, and heavy rain.

Despite the rainy season, Isnawa said the moderate phenomenon of El Nino would still occur until February 2024. However, drought and other impacts caused by El Nino would end once the rainy season arrives.

He called on all people to be aware of possible hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, landslides, and strong winds. “Prepare a disaster-go bag, update the latest weather information, and check water channels.”

In an emergency, people can reach the Jakarta Siaga call center 112.

Isnawa also said the BPBD Jakarta has made a series of efforts to mitigate the rainy season, including coordinating with related parties and deploying 267 disaster management personnel in each sub-district in the capital.
