Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the first two games of the 2024 season after being suspended by the NFL for violating its policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Garoppolo's violation stemmed from not having a valid therapeutic use exemption for a prescribed medication and he will not appeal the suspension.

This probably doesn't change much of anything for the Raiders. Garoppolo's future with the organization seemed pretty clear when he was benched after a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions.

At the time of his benching, Garoppolo was leading the NFL with nine interceptions despite having missed two games because of injuries. Fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell started the final nine games for the Raiders.

Garoppolo's tenure with the Raiders got off to an ominous start. He originally agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million deal in free agency, but the introductory press conference was postponed for unspecified reasons.

The Raiders officially announced Garoppolo's signing a few days later. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported in May the team had him sign a waiver allowing it to get out of the deal without financial penalty if he couldn't pass a physical.

The waiver was regarding the broken foot Garoppolo suffered late in the 2022 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He did pass his physical at the start of training camp.

Josh McDaniels, who was Garoppolo's offensive coordinator for four seasons with the New England Patriots, was the Raiders' head coach when the deal was signed. He was fired on Oct. 31, which was also the same day it was announced O'Connell would start the rest of the season.

The Raiders will save $11.3 million in cap space if they release Garoppolo, per Over the Cap. He will likely be entering free agency for the second consecutive year—this time facing a two-game suspension and coming off a horrendous showing in just seven appearances for Las Vegas.
