Escaped inmate Danelo Cavalcante was captured with the help of heat-seeking technology and ultimately subdued by a dog from the K-9 unit, sustaining a minor injury, according to Lt. Colonel George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Shortly after midnight, events unfolded including a burglar alarm at a residence triggered at Prizer road within the perimeter, Bivens said.
It was investigated but neither Cavalcante or others were found, he added, saying an area was being searched not far from there with tactical teams at a similar time.
An aircraft was using FLIR technology picked up a heat signal close to 1 a.m. ET, Bivens said.
“Tactical teams began to converge on that location where the heat source was moving,” he said.
The weather system and lightning caused the aircraft to have to depart the area, Bivens continued.
Tactical teams made a decision to “secure that smaller area as best they could and hold it through the storm,” he continued.
Additional resources were brought, and operations resumed earlier this morning “and shortly after 8 a.m. ET tactical teams converged on the area where the heat source was "moving in very quietly."
“Cavalcante did not realize he was surrounded until that had occurred,” Bivens said, adding, “That did not stop him from trying to escape.”
“He began to crawl through thick underbrush taking his rifle with him as he went,” Bivens continued.
US Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), Customs and Border Patrol teams released their dog, which subdued him as team members from that team and Pennsylvania State Police moved in.
“He continued to resist and was forcibly taken into custody,” Bivens said adding no one was injured.
He sustained a “minor bite wound” and medical personnel at the scene evaluated him.
He has been transported to the Pennsylvania State Police Avondale Barracks, Bivens said.
