Peter Buck’s Subway Success

Peter Buck, a businessman and philanthropist, had a net worth of $2.8 billion at the time of his death. He earned his fortune thanks to Subway, the fast food franchise he co-founded with his friend, Fred deLuca. Buck loaned deLuca $1000 to open their first sandwich shop, named “Pete’s Super Submarines”. Despite struggling, they continued to expand and renamed their shop “Subway”. By the early 70s, they had 16 locations in Connecticut, and today, Subway is the largest sandwich chain in the world with over 36,000 shops in 99 countries.

Buck graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in physics and later earned his Masters and doctorate from Columbia University. He worked as a nuclear physicist before entering the fast food industry.
