The Cleveland Browns are reportedly asking taxpayers to pay for half of a proposed $2.4 billion domed stadium or $1 billion worth of renovations to the franchise's current stadium.

Jeremy Pelzer of Cleveland.com reported there is no agreement in place for either proposal. Cleveland Browns Stadium opened in 1999 and underwent major renovations in 2014 and 2015.

The City of Cleveland owns the stadium, which was built in response to the Browns leaving for Baltimore in 1996.

The new stadium would be built in Brook Park, which is a suburb of Cleveland. According to the proposal, the new stadium would be a dome, which continues a leaguewide trend of cold-weather cities building domes.

Each of the last four new NFL stadiums features a retractable or fixed dome. SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas are the two most recent NFL stadiums to open.

While it's no surprise the Browns would be looking for a new stadium after a quarter-century at their current one, taxpayers have increasingly balked at footing the bill. Polls of residents across the country show generally negative-to-neutral attitudes on the projects, which come at the cost of higher taxes for citizens.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslem has a net worth of $8 billion.
