Mannie Fresh, born Byron O. Thomas on March 20, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana, was raised in the 7th Ward of New Orleans by his father DJ Sabu. At the age of 15, Mannie became a DJ for the NOLA-based hip hop group New York Incorporated.

Mannie Fresh’s Rise to Fame

Mannie Fresh began his career as a house and club DJ in New Orleans in the late 1980s. He partnered with MC Gregory and released three albums, including “Throwdown” in 1987. In 1993, he met Bryan “Baby” Williams and became the house DJ for Cash Money Records. Mannie produced chart-topping albums and tracks for Cash Money artists, including Juvenile, Turk, and Lil Wayne. He also produced two solo studio albums and runs his own record label, Chubby Boy Records.

Mannie’s songs have climbed to the top levels of various music charts. His highest charting song to date is 2000’s “Get Your Roll On” by the Big Tymers, which reached #6. The Big Tymers, a duo made of Mannie and Cash Money CEO Birdman, released five studio albums between 1998 and 2003, two of which went platinum and one which went gold. Mannie left Cash Money in 2005 to join Def Jam South, citing financial reasons. His album “Return of the Ballin'” was self-produced and featured Lil Jon and Rick Ross.
