Allen's Injury Another Blow in Long Season for Chargers
Allen had been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season for the Chargers.
This injury will be a difficult setback for the Chargers because he is the go-to wide receiver on the roster. According to Gehlken, the receiver's 67 catches through Week 8 put him in a tie for second place all-time with Rod Smith.
Allen topped 1,000 receiving yards and caught eight touchdown passes in his first season in 2013. He was not as dynamic statistically in his second year with 783 receiving yards and four touchdowns, but he is versatile enough to play on the outside or in the slot, and he is a red-zone threat at 6’2” with impressive athleticism.
His talent has been on full display this season.
The Chargers have other pieces to fill the void in the passing attack during his absence.
This is veteran Malcom Floyd’s 11th season, and he is fresh off career highs in 2014 with 856 receiving yards and six touchdown catches. Stevie Johnson is another proven pass-catcher who boasts three different seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards on his resume.
Elsewhere, tight end Antonio Gates is a surefire future Hall of Famer as one of the best to ever play the position. He serves as a security blanket for Philip Rivers when things break down and a lethal weapon near the goal line.
The Chargers have capable weapons to replace Allen, but losing him for the season makes turning around a 2-6 start almost impossible.
