Early Life
John Holmes was born on August 8, 1944 in Ashville, Ohio to Mary June and Carl. His mother had three children with her husband Edgar, whom she married and divorced three times. Holmes’s stepfather was an alcoholic, prompting him to seek refuge with his maternal grandparents. Eventually, they moved to Columbus, Ohio and later to Pataskala, Ohio when his mother remarried Harold Bowman. Holmes gained a half-brother named David from the marriage.
Early Life and Career of John Holmes
At the age of 15, John Holmes joined the US Army and served for three years in the Signal Corps in West Germany. After his discharge in 1963, he relocated to Los Angeles and took up various odd jobs, including door-to-door sales, ambulance driving, and forklift driving at a meatpacking warehouse. Unfortunately, due to his work in the latter job that required him to move from desert-hot air to a walk-in freezer, he developed a pneumothorax of his right lung.
John Holmes’s Career in Adult Film
John Holmes began his career in the adult film industry in the late 60s, starting with nude modeling for underground magazines and occasional porn film appearances. He had his breakthrough in 1971 when he played private investigator Johnny Wadd in a highly successful series of adult films written and directed by Bob Chinn. The series included titles such as “Flesh of the Lotus” and “The Danish Connection,” with the final entry released in 1986 as “The Return of Johnny Wadd.”
Over the course of his career, Holmes appeared in nearly 600 pornographic films, including notable titles such as “Confessions of a Teenage Peanut Butter Freak,” “Dracula Sucks,” “Insatiable,” and “Looking for Mr. Goodsex.” His final two pornographic film credits were “The Rise of the Roman Empress” and “The Devil in Mr. Holmes,” both shot in Italy.
John Holmes’ Penis Size
John Holmes was known for having an exceptionally long and thick penis, although there is no definitive measurement. Pornographic actress Dorothiea Patton claimed he had the biggest member in the industry, while Holmes himself boasted it was 16 inches long and 13 inches in circumference, which is widely dismissed as self-aggrandizement. A more realistic estimate puts his length at around 12.5 inches. His size also caused debate about whether he was ever able to achieve a full erection.
John Holmes’ Criminal Activities
During the 70s, John Holmes was arrested for pimping and pandering, but managed to evade imprisonment by offering information to the Los Angeles Police Department. However, his addiction to cocaine persisted and he resorted to engaging in criminal activities such as prostitution, drug dealing, credit card fraud, and petty theft to sustain his habits.
John Holmes’ Involvement in the Wonderland Gang Murders
Due to his drug habits, Holmes was closely associated with the Wonderland Gang, a cadre of Los Angeles drug dealers involved in the cocaine trade in the 70s and early 80s.
To win back the favor of the gang, Holmes told Wonderland members about a major cache of drugs, money, and jewelry that was supposedly being held by drug dealer and nightclub owner Eddie Nash. Holmes subsequently helped organize a home invasion and armed robbery of Nash’s home.
After forcing a confession of the robbery from Holmes, Nash sent him along with some others to get revenge on the Wonderland Gang. On July 1, 1981, four of the gang’s members were found slain in their Laurel Canyon rowhouse. Although Holmes was reportedly present during the killings, it was not established if he committed any of the murders.
Moreover, he refused to cooperate with the police investigation and was released on a lack of evidence. Holmes then went on the lam for five months before he was arrested in Florida in late 1981.
John Holmes Acquitted of Wonderland Murders
In 1982, John Holmes was charged with all four of the Wonderland murders. The trial was notable for being the first in the US to use video as evidence. Despite the evidence against him, Holmes was acquitted of all murder charges. However, he was found guilty of contempt of court and served several months in jail.
John Holmes’ HIV Diagnosis and Death
John Holmes was diagnosed with HIV in 1986 but did not disclose this information to anyone. He performed in his final two adult films without anyone knowing about his diagnosis. In 1987, he married Laurie Rose after informing her that he had AIDS. He was later admitted to the hospital and passed away in March 1988 at the age of 43.
