Jeffrey Franklin Murder- Adoptive Parents Found Guilty In The Case

The Jeffrey Franklin murder shocked the entire community.

It came to light when rural firefighters in Guilford, New York, responded to a report of a house on fire; they were surprised to find human remains inside.

The dead person was identified as Jeffrey Franklin, an adopted boy with disabilities who resided in the house.

Initially presumed to be a victim of the fire, the police subsequently uncovered a disturbing narrative underlying the tragedy.

In the episode “Things Weigh on You” of Investigation Discovery’s show “The Murder Tapes,” the horrifying murder that occurred in 2017 is documented, shedding light on the sinister plan devised by the culprits to evade justice.

Jeffrey Franklin murder: Details of the tragic crime

Jeffrey Franklin, a 16-year-old boy, was adopted at the age of 11 by a couple from Guilford who couldn’t have children of their own.

This adoption was a blessing for Jeffrey, who was deaf and living with autism.

Despite his challenges, Jeffrey was vibrant and deeply cherished his new parents.

The adoption marked a turning point in his troubled childhood, offering him a glimpse of a brighter future.

Unfortunately, this happiness was short-lived, as Jeffrey became the target of a sinister plan that tragically cut short his promising life.

Firefighters were notified of a house fire in Guilford on March 1, 2017.

The double-wide caravan on State Highway 8 was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

They came upon a couple outside the burning house who, at first didn’t remark that someone was trapped inside.

However, when the firefighters specifically inquired about any potential casualties, they revealed that their son, Jeffrey, who had disabilities, was still inside.

The firefighters battled tirelessly against the raging fire until they were able to recover the lifeless body of the young boy.

Initially, the police believed that Jeffrey had perished in the fire.

However, the results of the autopsy painted a different picture.

Examination of Jeffrey’s lungs revealed no signs of exposure to fire.

There were no indications of smoke or soot in his lungs, suggesting that the fire was not the cause of his death.

The medical examiners even concluded that Jeffrey had passed away prior to the outbreak of the fire, rendering the firefighters’ delayed arrival irrelevant to his tragic demise.

Who was behind Jeffrey Franklin murder?

Jeffrey Franklin’s adoptive parents, Ernest and Heather Franklin, were found guilty of Jeffrey’s murder.

Their Facebook posts show Ernest and Heather expressed dissatisfaction with their adopted child and frequently complained about his behavior.

The firefighters who first arrived at the scene of the fire also reported to the authorities that the parents appeared unconcerned about Jeffrey’s safety and instead focused on rescuing their pet animals trapped inside the house.

It was only when the firefighters insisted that Ernest and Heather informed them about Jeffrey’s presence.

Furthermore, there were allegations that Ernest purposely directed the firefighters to the wrong window, causing valuable minutes to be wasted as they had to take a longer route to reach the trapped teenager.

Prosecutors claimed that the parents had watched the movie ‘Manchester By The Sea,’ which gave them the notion that they would not be charged with murder if their son died in an accidental fire.

Additionally, according to the episode ‘The Murder Tapes’ on ID, it was alleged that the couple devised this heinous plan after Heather discovered she was pregnant.

Authorities believed that Jeffrey was violently killed before the fire began.

Ernest Franklin ignited a wood stove and left the door open to facilitate the fire spread throughout the trailer.

Meanwhile, Heather Franklin concocted an excuse to buy Benadryl and left her home, driving to Norwich.

She even drove around nearby areas such as Sidney, Bainbridge, and Coventry before returning to her residence at 2:18 am.

The parents deliberately attempted to delay and mislead the firefighters to ensure Jeffrey’s demise.

With the assistance of witness statements and the autopsy findings that indicated an unnatural death, the police arrested Ernest and Heather Franklin, charging them with Jeffrey’s murder.

Where are Franklin murderers now?

In 2017, while the couple awaited their trial, Heather gave birth to a baby boy when she was out on bail.

After being arrested, Ernest and Heather had separate legal proceedings.

Despite Ernest’s assertion of innocence, the jury convicted him guilty of murder.

He was also found guilty of tampering with tangible evidence and starting a fire.

These convictions resulted in Ernest Franklin receiving a life sentence.

He is currently detained at the Attica Correctional Facility, and until he has served a minimum of 21 years in prison, 2038 will be the earliest he will be eligible for release.

On the other hand, Heather agreed to a plea deal in which she acknowledged that she was aware of Ernest’s actions when she left the property on that crucial day.

After pleading guilty to the accusations of arson, tampering with tangible evidence, and manslaughter, she was handed a maximum jail term of seven years.

Heather, who is presently housed at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, will be eligible to submit a parole application in 2025.

The son of the couple is reportedly being cared for by his grandparents right now.
