Authorities Recover Body of Missing Georgia Duck Hunter in Alabama

The Geneva, Illinois community is mourning the loss of 14-year-old James Oliver, a freshman at Geneva High School who died on December 17th after suffering an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) stroke on December 8th.

The stroke occurred after Oliver had finished up swim team practice that Friday evening. According to swim coach Jennifer Heyer-Olsen, Oliver was a dedicated member of the junior varsity swim team for the West Chicago Co-op as well as the West Chicago Sharks swim club that Heyer-Olsen coaches. She described him as being fun loving, helpful, kind, hard working, respectful and “an absolute joy to coach.”

After the stroke, Oliver was hospitalized in critical condition at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. He tragically passed away nine days later on December 17th in the evening, as notified by Geneva High School Principal Tom Rogers in an email to faculty and students.

“We received very sad news last evening that James Oliver, a freshman here at Geneva High School, has passed away,” Rogers said in the announcement. “James suffered an AVM stroke on Friday, Dec. 8, after swim practice and was in critical condition until the time of his passing last night. As a school community, our thoughts are with his brother, Sean, a GHS junior, his family and friends, and our hearts are mourning this loss.”

Oliver is survived by his parents Molly and Rob Oliver, his brother Sean who is a junior and varsity swimmer at Geneva High, and his grandparents Diane and Bob Oliver of Downers Grove and Mary Jo and Tim Dailey of Winfield.

In addition to being an honors student and dedicated athlete, friends said Oliver was active with his church youth group, enjoyed collecting and trading sports cards, and loved to go fishing.

“Summer mornings in the pool will never be the same without experiencing the brotherly love, silliness, and ongoing whispering (usually regarding trading cards) between Sean and James,” said Coach Heyer-Olsen. “I am so grateful that I had the privilege to coach James, know James, and spend time with James and his family.”

The unexpected and tragic loss of someone so young has deeply impacted the entire Geneva community. Counseling services have been made available to students through the high school’s Student Services team.

A fundraiser has also been established by the Oliver family to help cover medical and other expenses, having already raised nearly $25,000 toward a $50,000 goal. Anyone wishing to express sympathy or lend financial support can donate at [insert link].

While nothing can makeup for the loss of this beloved son, brother, friend and student-athlete, the Geneva community has come together to comfort one another and honor Oliver’s memory during this profoundly difficult time.
