He excelled academically and in extracurricular activities at Fairmount High School and moved back to California after graduation to attend Santa Monica College and later UCLA, where he studied drama. While at UCLA, he was chosen from a large group of actors to portray Malcolm in Macbeth and joined James Whitmore’s workshop. He dropped out of UCLA after one year to pursue acting full-time.
James Dean’s Brief but Iconic Career
Dean’s first acting gig was in a commercial for Pepsi and he was then cast as an extra in two films in 1952. He struggled to gain roles in Hollywood but landed his first starring role on Broadway in “See the Jaguar.” He appeared in several TV shows in the early ’50s and went on to have leading roles in only three films during his brief career.
His most well-known role was rebellious teenager Jim Stark in 1955’s “Rebel Without a Cause,” which was hugely popular amongst teens. Dean’s final picture was 1956’s “Giant,” in which he starred as Jett Rink and was nominated for a second Academy Award for Best Actor. At the end of “Giant,” Dean gave a drunken speech at a banquet, which is now nicknamed “The Last Supper,” due to it being the last scene before Dean died suddenly.
Dean is often seen through the lens of history as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment.
