How Did Jalen Brunson Parents Encourage Him During His Career?

Jalen Brunson parents are the main reason behind his athletic career in NBA. Father, Rick Brunson, and mother Sandra Brunson, both have an athletic background.

On August 31, 1996, Jalen came into this world in New Brunswick, New Jersey. His father’s basketball career led the family to relocate often before finally settling in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Jalen Brunson is engaged to his high school sweetheart, Ali Marks, whom he has been in a relationship with since their teenage years.

His mother, Sandra Brunson, is a former collegiate volleyball star who backed his son to achieve his career goals.

Rick Brunson is a 9-year-old National Basketball Association veteran. He played for many teams during his career.

Jalen Brunson parents helped their son by encouraging him at each and every single step of his life.

He drove his team to the destination with 23 points. Immanuel Quickley had 19, and RJ Barrett scored 21 off the bench.

The NY Knicks have advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the very first time in 10 years after defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers with a final score of 106-95 in game 5 of their first-round postseason matchup Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

The Knicks posted a fantastic defensive show. The Caves entered the playoffs averaging 112.3 points per game, but unfortunately, they failed to hit 100 points four times in five postseason matchups vs. the NY Knicks.

Jalen’s father also played in the NBA for almost a decade but never stuck with one team for much more than a season.

During Rick’s NBA career, he played for the Chicago Bulls, the Boston Celtics, and the New York Knicks, to name a few, and his hard work and career really impacted Jalen.

Jalen’s family shifted around a lot due to his father’s career, but when Rick went to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2001-02, his wife and children remained in New Jersey.

The NY Knicks star was so hooked on his father’s career and the sport that he’d stay up well past midnight just to able to talk to his dad on the phone after his West Coast games, Jalen said in an interview.

When Rick was with the Knicks, his son would follow him to the locker room and imitate the players on the team. At the time, the current NY Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau was an assistant coach for the team.

Thibodeau said in an interview, “You have no idea that he’s going to end up being a pro or anything like that, but it was uncanny. Everyone would just crack up. He had all their footwork down, jab steps, everything.”

However, before the 2006-2007 season, Rick sensed that the Philadelphia 76ers had decided to eject him. On the drive home, when he told his son that his NBA playing career was over, Jalen cried over this news.

Later, he told his son that if he really wanted an NBA career, he’d have to drill harder than ever before.

When Jalen got to seventh grade, he quit all other sports activities to just focus on basketball.

Rick asked him, “Is this what you want? Do you really want this?”

He said yes, and started drilling alongside his father in earnest. It began three times a week before increasing to daily training.

Throughout his basketball journey, including his time in the National Basketball Association, Rick would not hesitate to call him out. After one game in which Jalen did not pass enough to his teammates, his father reamed him out.

He told his son that none of those audiences came here just to watch him play alone, pass the ball or get out of the game.

In another instance recounted by the Dallas Morning News, Rick texted his son after a game that, “If you’re not going to compete, man, you’re going to buy me a new TV, because I’m going to throw my shoe through the TV.”

In the beginning, Brunson Jr. was tough on him, but Jalen made it clear that it was his call to continue his career with that dynamic.

He said that his father would tell him that if he did not want this type of training, let him know, and he might stop.

But Jalen always opted to keep going and even wrote an essay in school about his father being his role model.

Jalen Brunson’s mother encouraged him to set goals

However, it is evident that Jalen was inspired by his NBA veteran father to continue basketball. Still, he shared that his mother was just as instrumental in him achieving his goals.

Rick and Sandra first met at Temple University, where she played volleyball, and he played basketball. According to some sources, Jalen Brunson mother was sophisticated and polished, everything that Rick was not.

In 1994, she graduated from Temple with a bachelor of business administration in business law. Sandra was very encouraging of her son’s dreams, and she taught him how to set goals for his career.

She did not want her son and daughter to focus on his absence when Rick was away serving as a coach in Charlotte, and they lived in Illinois.

Sandra also started putting motivational quotes around the house, on mirrors, on the refrigerator, and on almost every corner of the house. She said that she wanted her children to see the quotes all the time, and they had eventually become ingrained in them.

Jalen Brunson parents were behind all of his hard working out and basketball training.

In fact, he said that his mother is 100% his best friend. He further added that “I really do thank you for loving me every single day and being there every single day and allowing me to annoy you every day that I can,”

Sandra had also messaged him before every single game he played, giving him a bunch of motivational things to think about and encouraging him to be a leader and focus on his ability.
