Colorado is going to find motivation wherever it can, though the Buffaloes do not lack for detractors.
After Saturday’s game, quarterback Shedeur Sanders said he had no respect for Nebraska’s program after coach Matt Rhule criticized his father.
“The coach said a lot of things about my pops, about the program but now that he want to act nice, I don’t respect that. Because you hating on another man, you shouldn’t do that. All respect was gone for them and their program. I like playing against their DC, I like playing against them but respect level, it ain’t there because you disrespected us first.”
Sanders is almost certainly referring to a comment Rhule made in April as the transfer portal was set to open for the spring window.
“I hear other schools saying they can't wait for today, the transfer portal, I can't wait to coach my guys,” said the Huskers’ first-year coach.
Colorado took 58 transfers – more than any team in America this offseason – and drew criticism for cutting a host of players after the spring game. But there’s no indication Rhule was directly referring to Colorado. The portal has been a talking point all offseason at a variety of programs, but with Nebraska’s rivalry with Colorado, Rhule’s comments could serve as a Rorschach test of sorts.
Rhule wasn’t explicitly referencing Colorado, but the Buffaloes would certainly qualify as one of the transfer-happy programs Rhule was speaking about.
