The Hamptons residence was entirely rebuilt by the Extreme Makeover Home Edition team in 2009. They previously lived in a small bungalow with one bedroom, and one bath.
It was a perfect family of four for the Hamptons until they welcomed their four nieces and nephews to their house. The Hampton couple became aware that Nikki's young nieces and nephews have been neglected by their birth parents.
In March 2007, they received a call from social services. They gave them an hour to decide whether or not to take on their four nieces and nephews.
Without hesitation, the couple invited the kids to live with them. The size of the family just doubled overnight. The only options left for them were to either move to a bigger house or to expand their own home.
To accommodate the room for the six kids, they turned their dining room into a bedroom. All three boys slept in the room on a set of bunk beds. Another bunk bed was set up in the closet for the three girls.
There was no more space to put furniture for clothes and other kinds of stuff. Most of the clothes were stacked in plastic tubs rising from the floor to the ceiling.
They were looking for contractors who could rebuild the house in the least time possible. That is when they decided to contact the Extreme Makeover team.
The Hampton family was nominated for the show by Chris' mother, Cathie Hampton. Cathie is a Chillicothe native and CHS graduate of 1971. Later, she discovered that 15 other people had also nominated the family for a new home.
