Personal Statement
UPDATE: As of May 2017, Boston GloblebAll Scholastic Goalie, Boston Herald Dream Team Goalie, Shriners All Star Goalie, Mass All Conference Goalie.
In September of 2016 I will be entering my Senior year at Winthrop High School and will begin my 7th season as a Varsity hockey player. I have set many goals along the way and have now set my sights on having a successful final season of high school hockey and being accepted to a College where I can obtain a nursing degree while playing on a competitive woman’s hockey team. Although challenging, I believe I will be successful as I am a very internally motivated and driven to reach my goals. My history of success is, in part, due to having a competitive nature and enjoying being challenged both on and off the ice. Battling Celiac Disease as a young child kept me from being able to play sports until I was 10 years old as it was difficult to compete with a feeding tube in place and the risk of dehydration. I had to fight to catch up athletically and physically and was always being challenged to eat more and stay healthy. The first sport I was introduced to was ice hockey and I was placed in the net because I was to shy to say no. As a young goalie my drive and competitive spirit became evident and it has shaped who I am as a student athlete.
Throughout my schooling, hockey has been a key factor in my academic and social success. Having to follow a strict training and practice schedule of both high school and select hockey while balancing a challenging course load has taught me how to manage my time and balance my social life. Playing varsity hockey as early as 6th grade has helped me learn how to make good choices, be open minded, manage conflict and learn resolution skills. I have had the experience of being led by many Captains and have learned the qualities and patients necessary to be a strong leader both on and off the ice. I value my role as a second year Captain for the Winthrop High School Varsity Hockey Team and hope that my leadership skills support and teach my teammates to challenge themselves athletically, excel academically, support each other socially and emotionally and to always be humble and kind.
Beyond school and hockey my other interests include volunteering as a youth hockey goalie coach, listening to music, learning how to professionally apply make up, spending time bass fishing at our family lake house, hanging with friends and watching CSI.
Over the past 2 years I have dedicated my self to achieve my goal of playing college hockey by seeking out challenging hockey tournaments, attending goalie clinics, committing to off ice training, playing select hockey and improving my technical goalie skills. It is my hope that by this time next year I will be a valuable member of University with a great nursing program and a successful woman’s hockey program.
