George W. Hunter Sr. – Metropolitan Funeral

On Monday, September 13, 2021, George W. Hunter, Sr., 86 of Chesapeake, VA transitioned from this life surrounded by his loving family.
George was born to the late Louise Basnight and Herman Hunter, who passed away in his early childhood. After the death of his parents, he was raised in Chesapeake, VA by family. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife Betty E. Hunter and his brother Clifton Shambry.

George was a member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA where he worshipped. When he was no longer able to attend church, he prayed and studied his bible daily at home.

George began his career working for the US Government. In 1972, his job transferred him to Harrisburg, PA where he raised his family. There he became a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Male Usher Board until retiring and returning to Virginia to spend his retirement years with family and friends.

George became known as “Mr. Fantastic” because if you asked him how he was doing he responded, heartedly “FANTASTIC.” He enjoyed spending time with his family and was so proud of them, George enjoyed talking to his children and grandchildren daily about  everything. One thing for sure, no matter when you talked to him, he always talked about his wife who was the love of his life and his God.

George was such a jokester and always said something to make you laugh. He was a great cook and made the BEST chocolate cake ever.

The last thing he would say when you left his house or ended a phone conversation was, “tell the children and family, I love you all.”

George is survived by his loving, devoted and faithful children: four  daughters, Jacqueline Johnson (William) and Beatrice Lyles (Willie) of  Chesapeake, VA, Sonia Greene (Odell) and Shiree Hunter of Harrisburg, PA, two sons, George W. Hunter, Jr., of Tampa, FL and Sylvester Hunter  of Chesapeake, VA, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren. One adoring aunt, Inez Wright, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
