Only the Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors have less money committed to their 2024-25 rosters than OKC's $97.2 million.
Even if the franchises chases down a star, it should be able to avoid the projected luxury tax of $172 million. Either the room mid-level exception or non-taxpayer's mid-level exception should be in play.
Now, this doesn't mean OKC will be raining money on free agents. Isaiah Joe's deal expires after 2024-25, then Josh Giddey, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams will be due for extensions in coming years. Short-term plans need to fit a promising long-term vision.
