Eshott Hall Hotel Review, Northumberland

Escape to Northumberland and stay at the traditional Eshott Hall. Situated in the tiny village, the immediate vicinity is one of peace and tranquility. A short drive from the beach and landmarks such as Alnwick Castle, the property provides a great base for further exploration. With facilities such as a tennis court, and the opportunity to arrange clay-pigeon shooting, guests are never stuck for things to do.

Helen Pickles, Telegraph Travel’s Northumberland expert, says: ‘‘A small and elegant country house that feels deep in the countryside yet is close to the A1. With charming main rooms, antiques in bedrooms and fine-dining food, it makes for a comfortable retreat or a useful luxury stop-over on journeys to and from Scotland.’’

The location

The property is in the perfect location for exploring England’s northernmost county. 15 minutes from the seaside and Alnwick Castle less than 30 minutes by car.

The rooms

Generously spaced and furnished with antiques, the hotel’s 20 rooms are split between the main house and estate buildings.

The food

Fine dining without fuss and crucially, adequate portions. A reasonable wine list compliments the food nicely. The dining rooms are charming during the day and at night.
