Darrelle Revis knows a thing or two about shutting down loudmouths, both on and off the football field. The star cornerback for the New York Jets went on the air on "Mike'd Up" with Mike Francesa, a renowned Gang Green hater and radio blowhard for WFAN and YES, and ended up getting pulled off by a public relations representative from the team.
It was not because Revis said anything particularly egregious or offensive, but rather because Francesa wouldn't let up, or so it would seem. Francesa spent the interview obsessing over Revis' 100-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football, insisting that Revis got away with a pass interference penalty on the play.
Like any self-respecting NFL star, Revis shot down Francesa's allegations, pointing instead to the fact that Brandon Marshall, the receiver he was defending, tripped and fell into him and, more importantly, that the pass was well behind Marshall to begin with.
Francesa failed to grasp what Revis was getting at, and chose instead to badger the Pro Bowler with his own opinion for several minutes, during which the discussion devolved into Francesa claiming he knows more about football than a guy who plays it for a living.
Then, out of nowhere, someone from the Jets called into the show and pulled Revis off the air, to which Revis responded, "That is why nobody talks to this guy. You have never played the game." Francesa didn't cease to insist he was right, even after Revis got pulled off the air, choosing instead to blast the Jets to a chorus of Giants fans who called in.
As expected, the Twittersphere blew up, some with praise for Revis, some with disdain for Francesa, others combining it all into one.
Apparently, Revis Island has room for radio hosts and journalists, too.
