NEW YORK (CNN) -- Spring has begun, but the weather in New York feels more like winter.
New York City is expecting 5 to 9 inches of snow accumulation Monday, according a winter storm warning that has been put into effect through late Monday night.
The National Weather Service expects the snow to start in the morning and change to freezing drizzle and sleet by later Monday evening.
New York has seen snow in April, but only a few inches in recent years.
The record snowfall for the city in April dates back to 1875, with 13.5 inches of snow and 10 inches in one day.
The record snowfall in Central Park for April 7 is 3.1 inches, set in 1938.
The snow is expected to hit north of the city, with possibly 12 inches of accumulation likely in Westchester County, according to the National Weather Service.
Dozens of schools in the surrounding areas have cancellations in anticipation of the storm, with a few districts announcing early dismissals.
The National Weather Service announces a winter storm warning when at least 6 inches of snow is expected.
