(CNN) -- "Harry Potter" filmmakers have tapped Daniel Radcliffe, 11, to play the role of the adolescent wizard in the upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels. Warner Bros. made the announcement Monday on its Web site.
The young Brit has a couple of professional acting gigs on his resume already. He recently portrayed young David Copperfield in a BBC special and is to appear in "The Tailor of Panama" later this year.
Newcomers Rupert Grint, 11, and Emma Watson, 10, have been cast as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, Harry's best friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the statement said.

"We saw so many enormously talented kids in the search for Harry," director Chris Columbus said. "The process was intense and there were times when we felt we would never find an individual who embodied the complex spirit and depth of Harry Potter.
"Then, Dan walked into the room and we all knew we had found Harry. We were equally elated upon meeting Emma and Rupert who are perfect for the roles of Hermione and Ron. I couldn't be happier to begin work with such talented, inspiring young actors."
Rowling added her approval.
"Having seen Dan Radcliffe screen test, I don't think Chris Columbus could have found a better Harry," she said. "I wish Dan, Emma and Rupert the very best of luck and hope that they have as much fun acting the first year at Hogwarts as I had writing it."
Radcliffe beat out Haley Joel Osment for the part. Osment, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "The Sixth Sense," said last spring he would like to play Harry.
"Warner Bros. who is producing the film, is owned by Time Warner, which is the parent company of CNN."
