LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- An 11-year-old girl injured in a traffic accident was killed Monday when the ambulance helicopter taking her to a hospital crashed in woods in Los Angeles. Three paramedics on board also died.
City Fire Department spokesman Davis Parsons said the pilot and another man aboard the helicopter survived the crash and were in the hospital in serious condition with head injuries and fractures.
He declined to speculate on the cause of the crash. The pilot managed to maneuver the Fire Department helicopter away from houses to woodlands near Griffith Park in the heart of the city. There were no reports of injuries on the ground.
A local TV station showed video of the wreckage, including the chopper's tail rotor section which was nearly a mile from the crash site.
Parsons said four people died in the crash, including the girl who was being transported to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. She was injured in a traffic accident when the vehicle she was riding in collided with a garbage truck.
