The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo agreed to a contract extension Wednesday.
The team did not announce the terms of the deal.
Spagnuolo, 64, has been the Chiefs' defensive coordinator since 2019. He played out the final year of his contract in 2023, helping lead a defensive turnaround in Kansas City that helped spark a Super Bowl victory.
The Chiefs, long reliant on their offense with their defense hanging toward the middle of the pack, arguably became a stronger defensive team than offensive force this season. Spagnuolo's unit ranked second in yards allowed and points against during the regular season.
Kansas City also thwarted four of the NFL's best offenses (Miami, Buffalo, Baltimore and San Francisco) on the way to repeating as Super Bowl champions.
Los Angeles Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff complimented Spagnuolo after the Chiefs defeated the 49ers, saying the coordinator deserves another chance to be a head coach.

Spagnuolo went 10-38 in three seasons as a head coach with the then-St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011. He was also 1-3 in a four-game stint as the New York Giants' interim coach in 2017.
