Capello opens England reign with win

LONDON, England -- Fabio Capello launched his England managerial reign with a Wembley win as his new 'hard-line' approach was rewarded with a 2-1 victory over Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland.

Jenas scores his first international goal as England marked Capello's first match as manager with a victory.

Capello had refused to pick David Beckham for his 100th cap and left leading scorer Michael Owen sitting on the bench as Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips finally gave the fans something to cheer after a tentative start.

Tottenham midfielder Jenas celebrated his first England start for 33 months by netting the first goal of the Capello era after 40 minutes - his first goal for his country.

Up until then there had been little for the crowd to enthuse about and at one stage even a chorus of boos broke out.

Swiss substitute Eren Derdiyok threatened to darken the mood once again with an equaliser early in the second half, but substitute Wright-Phillips came to the rescue three minutes later.

Capello will have taken several pluses from the friendly with Blackburn's David Bentley impressing in Beckham's right-flank role.

No-one worked harder than Wayne Rooney who came close to giving England the lead after 11 minutes.

Joe Cole was the creator with a reverse pass which Rooney ran onto but goalkeeper Diego Benaglio was quick to react and block the left-footed shot.

Unsurprisingly Rooney was posing the biggest threat and a first-time flick from a low Ashley Cole cross was only just off target.

Jenas made a quiet start to his England comeback but he did well to stay onside when David Bentley found him in space just inside the Swiss box.

However, the Tottenham player took one touch too many with Joe Cole waiting and Benaglio was able to cut out the low cross.

The England crowd seemed less than impressed with what they were seeing and boos broke out after a series of misplaced passes in quick succession.

Joe Cole at least forced Benaglio into a save with a first time effort after exchanging passes with Gerrard. Then Bentley spotted Benaglio off his line and was only just too high with a 35-yard chip.

Jenas finally broke the deadlock with his first goal for his country after 40 minutes - with Chelsea's Cole the creator.

The midfielder shook off the challenge of Stephan Lichtsteiner before reaching the byline and his low cross presented Jenas with the easiest of opportunities.

Swiss manager Jakob Kuhn made a treble half-time substitution with Eren Derdiyok, Valon Behrami and Johan Vonlanthen replacing Nfuko, Lichtsteiner and Gygax respectively. But Capello preferred to start the second period with the same line-up.

Bentley created an opening for Rooney with a floated chip but his first touch was not perfect and the ball slipped past the post.

Blackburn winger Bentley was becoming an increasing force and he again played in Rooney but his first time chip was just too high much to the relief of the back-pedalling Benaglio.

Rooney had a volley deflected for a corner and Benaglio denied Jenas a second goal with a fine finger-tip save to keep out his left-footed effort from just inside the box.

Capello made a double substitution after 57 minutes when he sent on Shaun Wright-Phillips and Peter Crouch for Joe Cole and Jenas -- but within 60 seconds Switzerland were back on level terms.

Barnetta was the creator with a reverse pass and Derdiyok's first time left-footed shot beat the dive of James and ended up in the corner of the net.

England needed only three minutes to regain the lead through Wright-Phillips' fourth goal for his country.

The Chelsea winger made a run into the box and was perfectly placed to convert Gerrard's low ball as Switzerland's claims he had strayed offside were waved aside by referee Felix Brych. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
