Staley, popularly known for his defensive coaching style, started his coaching career at North Illinois as a graduate assistant from 2006 to 2008.
Later, in 2009, He worked with defensive linemen and special teams at Division III St. Thomas.
He also worked as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Hutchinson Community College in 2010 and 2011.
As a graduate assistant, he served the 2012 season at Tennessee.
Staley spent three seasons (2013, 2015, and 2016 ) with John Carroll University as a secondary coach, while he remained as a linebackers coach at James Madison University in 2014.
Staley was appointed as an outside linebackers coach by the Chicago Bears in 2017 and by Denver Broncos in 2019.
He was appointed by the LOS Angeles Rams as their defensive coordinator on Jan 16, 2020, leading his side to the first position in points.
On Jan 17, 2021, Staley was appointed as the Los Angeles Chargers head coach and made his regular-season debut as a head coach against Washington on Sep 12.
