Adam Bowen is an American entrepreneur and businessman with a net worth of $900 million. He is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Juul Labs, an electronic cigarette company. Bowen and his co-founder James Monsees met while studying at Stanford University in 2004 and founded Juul in 2015. Altria purchased a 35% stake in Juul in December 2018, which increased Bowen’s net worth.
Juul became the most popular e-cigarette in the U.S., but has faced multiple investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to its high nicotine concentrations. In December 2019, the company was valued at $38 billion. However, the ongoing controversies caused the value to drop by more than half to $14 billion in 2020.
During a July 2019 Congressional hearing, Bowen’s co-founder James Monsees was criticized by California representative Mark DeSaulnier, who called Monsees “an example of the worst of the Bay Area” and accused him of marketing poison to young people.
Despite reaching billionaire status in 2019, Bowen dropped out of the club after Juul’s valuation plummeted due to public concern. He and Monsees now own less than 2% of the company each.
